What a downpour

Albert Road, Deal
Albert Road, Deal

Home owners in Deal are still counting the cost of flood damage at their properties after a torrential rain storm hit the area.

Roads were closed as drain covers were forced upwards, BT phones were cut off and streets quickly became rivers.

Three inches, or 7.5cm, of rain fell in about 40 minutes, sending people running for cover.

Some businesses were under water and drivers who sped through the flooded roads, spraying water into houses, were called inconsiderate imbeciles by angry people trying to keep their homes dry.

In the Deal area almost 20 calls in the space of an hour were made to Kent Fire and Rescue from members of the public concerned about flooded roads and drains.

A couple of calls were from residents worried about a gas smell that turned out to be a smell from flooded drains.

One call was from a passenger trapped in a car under the Gilford Road railway bridge, but when the crew arrived they were already safety out of the vehicle.
