Hundreds of GCSE students in the Dover district received their results today - with at least one school breaking a previous best performance.

Sixty-seven per cent of Sandwich Technology School students achieved the five A* to C grades benchmark with 96 per cent achieving five at A* to G.

Executive Headteacher Richard Wallis said: “We are particularly pleased with student performance in science and technology, with the highest number of A and A* grades yet recorded in the history of the school."

Thomas Dymott, Hannah Mitten, Tiffany Sausby and Nicholas Thomas were among the highest-performing students, each obtaining

13 GCSEs at A* to C, the majority A and A* grades.

Astor College, Dover, expressed delight at a four per cent rise (to 27 per cent) in the number of students obtaining five or more A* to C grades, including English and maths.

"This demonstrated considerable progress towards the highly controversial, discriminatory and damaging Government targets," said a spokesman.

Staff and students at Walmer Science College were also celebrating. Just under half the students gained higher grade passes in biology, chemistry and physics. Other high performing subjects included art and design, drama, German, ICT, religious studies and statistics.
