Sandown Primary School teachers create uplifting 'Reach for the Stars' video for pupils during lockdown

Teachers at a Deal school have shown pupils just how much they are being missed in an uplifting video.

Year 2 teacher Hayley Porter was behind the idea and sent out a message to all staff at Sandown Primary School asking them to get involved.

As they sing along to the lyrics of S Club 7's hit Reach for the Stars, they tell the youngsters, aged four to 11, that, "we've got to all stick together".

They also remind them that: "When the world, leaves you feeling blue, you can count on me, I will be there for you."

The 4 minute and 50 second recording features teachers, teaching assistants and governors and was edited together by Year 4 teacher Malte Hoffman.

One staff member shows off her pet chicken, while others don colourful and quirky outfits including such as a tiger onesie.

Danni Harris, teacher in Year 3, demonstrates her Makaton skills.

Year 6 teacher Kirsty Knight wears a rainbow t-shirt and has since set a whole school challenge to make a positivi-tee - a t-shirt with a positive message on.

She said: "The reaction to the video has been amazing.

"We have shared it on our website, facebook and our online learning portal tapestry which we are using to keep in contact with pupils and parents.

"Parents and pupils have been commenting on how much they have enjoyed the video, how it has made them smile and laugh and some have even commented on happy tears.

"As a staff we can't put into words how much we are truly missing all of our fantastic pupils, we can't wait to get back to school and see them all again.

"Creativity is one of our school values alongside independence and collaboration. We had to record by ourselves but we all came together to make something we hope our pupils will enjoy."

Year 2 teacher Hayley Porter, who organised the video, said: "We have been overwhelmed with the responses from parents and children.

"We are so happy that we managed to bring a smile to everyone's faces and we look forward to seeing everyone at the gate again soon."

Head teacher Kate Luxford said: "This was our way of keeping in touch. We are very much looking forward to being back at school and doing what we do best."

It's not the first video staff have created.

Last summer they hosted Sandown's Got Talent for which they recorded a video to (Is this the way to) Amarillo.

Ms Knight added: "A parent has suggested we make it a regular thing.

"If lockdown continues we would love to do some more videos, Sandown pupils need to watch this space!"
