Walmer Sports Spectacular at the Drill Field in Canada Road, will showcase sports like sailing, trampolining, rugby and triathlon

Imagine an event where you can try your hand at the sports you've always wanted to try but never have... A showcase of more than 20 sports, some regular, some diverse, and involving local teams and clubs.

That's the vision of the Walmer Sports Spectacular volunteer committee who are putting together a huge event were the young and old can have a go and link up with experts who will put them on the right track to a new hobby.

Cllr David Thompson of Walmer Parish Council explained his vision for the inaugural event is a revamp of the Sports Spectacular he chaired in 1980.

That event 39 years ago was held at what was called the Betteshanger Welfare Ground in Cavell Square. It boasted 2,500 sportsmen and women and 1,00 spectators.

Now, on Saturday, June 22, a full programme is being organised to fill South Barracks Sports Ground at the Drill Field in Canada Road from 10am-5pm.

Cllr Thompson told The Mercury his passion for sport, its social and health benefits, and where it has taken him in the world, is his inspiration to "give something back".

Plus, a dying out of formerly strong sports like Sunday League football, netball and table tennis in Deal is another prompt to encourage followers to take them up.

The committee of five volunteers are the powerhouse behind the spectacular. These include former local authority sports development officer for Lambeth and Cambridge Cllr Thompson, Frances Campbell, Susan McCarthy, Angela Stone and Eddie Taylor.

They have linked with venue owners Walmer Parish Council to secure the field, plus tenants Deal & Betteshanger Rugby Club, whose members will man a barbecue and open the clubhouse bar.

The lions' coaches and team members will give demonstrations and hold games and fitness training.

A multi activity area will be the centre focus where people can try the sports being exhibited. An MC compere will keep the programme running smoothly.

Healthy eating vendors will inspire visitors to try good foods alongside the rugby club's barbecue.

Sailing, bowles, golf, fencing, trampolining, tennis, judo, American football, tai chi and archery are on show. More sports are planned to create a feast of entertainment for the taking part or spectating.

This all comes after the opening ceremony featuring a warm up - vital before starting fitness and part of the recipe to get hearts pumping and enthused to give everything a go.
