Deal’s young and old fell silent at a Remembrance service on Tuesday to honour the fallen soldiers of war.

Veterans, members of Deal and Dover associations and councillors along with children from Warden House Primary School and Castle Community College gathered around the war graves memorial at Hamilton Road Cemetery, Deal, to take part in the service conducted by the Reverend John Lines MBE.

“Let us commemorate and commend the loving memory of those who died in war for our country and cause,” Revd Lines said as he opened the service.

The Last Post was played and the congregation stood in a two-minute silence, while the sun broke through the gaps in the trees.

Wreaths were laid by numerous dignitaries including Dover District Council chairman Sue Nicholas.

Deal Town Mayor Deryck Murray, who laid a wreath, was remembering his father who died in the Second World War.

He said: “When I see the veterans, I am humbled by their dedication. They have memories that we don’t have.”

He commended 94-year-old veteran Sidney Gibbons, a standard bearer for Dover and Deal Burma Star Association, who took part in the service.

Members of the Betteshanger Colliery Welfare Band; John Goold, Bridgette Goold, Steve Griffiths, Dennis Atkinson and Paul Richardson assisted the congregation in two hymns Eternal Father Strong To Save and Abide With Me aswell as the national anthem.

Malcolm Gibbons of The Royal British Legion (Downs) Branch, who organised the act of Remembrance, said: “It went really well and it’s nice to see the young people here, that’s what it’s all about.”

He thanked the Revd Lines and all those who attended.
