Plans to re-design South Street in Deal are labelled ‘half baked’

A traffic scheme has been devised to improve South Street in Deal.

The design, has been drawn up by KCC Highways and aims to aid public transport access, as well as make best use of the road space for all road users.

The direction of traffic could completely change, with motorists driving down Sondes Road and up South Street, still in a one-way flow.

There will be a loading bay in place of the bus station, as well as three new bus bays and three bus shelters on the High Street side of the road.

While still in very early stages, of planning, other features include a wider footway by Lloyds Bank.

The redesign, which the public will be consulted on, has already been circulated to town councillors including Cllr Bob Frost.

He has labelled it a half-baked plan and is concerned traffic from Sondes Road will be directed into South Street. He doesn’t agree that those using taxis, often the elderly and disabled, should have to cross the road rather than come straight off the High Street to access a service. He is also concerned for the premises nearby, such as new bar No 5.

He said: “The buses will be revving up outside their bar.”

“I wasn’t impressed with it at all. KCC have got this pot of money and they just want to spend it. I’m worried they’re trying to push it through during a time of chaos.”

No 5 owner Danny Harris, was unaware of any changes and is not keen on the proposals.

He said: “I don’t think buses outside would do us any favours. It’s not conducive for business at all.”

General manager Alec Johnson said the venue is a sun trap and space to allow them outside seating would be much better scheme, for them and the community.
