A primary school in Deal has been inundated with support after vandals drew graffiti and urinated in the outdoor play area.

Sandown Primary School was broken into two weeks ago, when criminals destroyed toys and books that were used by the four and five-year-olds in reception class.

The school was left devastated by the “mindless” damage and since then, the Rotary Club of Deal has pledged to replace each item that the school in Golf Road had to throw away.

June Frazer, 68, from Deal, saw the front page story of the Mercury on Thursday, November 26, and also felt compelled to try and help.

As a child minder for many years, Ms Frazer still had lots of books, games, fuzzy felts, and chalks which she kindly gave to the school.

She said: “I just thought Sandown could do with a bit of help. I can’t understand people when they do something like that.

“Children are the future generation and children come first with me, always have done and always will.”

She has worked with children all her life from being a nanny to working at Alderden House children’s home in Walmer.

Anna Palmer and Adrian Cooke, the early years teachers at Sandown have praised Ms Frazer and the Rotary Club for their support.

In a letter, they said: “We would just like to thank June Frazer. She read our story and she donated us lots of books, games and puzzles to replace what we lost.

“We would also like to recognise the generosity of the Rotary Club who have offered to help in any way they can.

“The children send their thanks - what lovely community spirit.”

The Rotary Club has also agreed to fund the cost of improving the school’s CCTV system to ensure that something like this doesn’t happen again.

Head teacher Kate Luxford said: “Can I just thank everybody for your support with information regarding the unpleasant damage in our early years area. We have had many people calling in with information and we have been able to pass on some useful bits to the police. We have also had a lovely offer from a lady in Deal who has donated some books to the school. Again, thank you for all the kind words and information.”
