The toilets at The Phoenix Centre in Sandwich are among the best in Britain.

Volunteers at the building in Jubilee Road are celebrating winning two prestigious awards at the 2008 Loo of the Year Awards.

The toilets were voted the national winners in the community centre category and also gained a five-star rating.

Andy Lown from the centre said: “We were honoured to be named as the overall winners in our class and to be one of only ten community venues in the UK to receive such a high grading.”

Phoenix volunteers travelled to Birmingham to collect their awards, which recognised the hard work and attention to detail at the centre.

Chairman Phil Scott said “We felt that in light of the regular criticism of other toilets in the town we should set an example and encourage the highest possible standards in all types of public toilets.”

Elleanor Scott, volunteer, added: 'Everyone has a responsibility to provide good facilities, toilet providers, councils, managers, suppliers and staff.

“It is great that our hard work has been recognized.”
