Everyone welcome at Seahaven's open day

As part of National Care Home Open Day, Seahaven in Kingsdown is opening its doors to the community on Friday.

The home, in Wellington Parade, provides support for individuals with learning disabilities and sensory and behavioural needs.

Registered manager Sharon Head, who was awarded National Care Innovator at the National Care Awards in 2013 after being nominated by her employer, said: “We’d like to remind people that care homes in every community are filled with unique, intelligent and charming characters, and run by special people that really do care.

“We are inviting families, care managers, our neighbours, anyone, who would like to pop in and see what we do. They will be made most welcome.”

The event, from noon until 4pm, will be a chance for people to get involved in communication-based activities such as Makaton songs, massage, arts and crafts and baking.

Other activities include jewellery making, beauty sessions, as well as entertainment from music groups and resident DJ Michael who is leading the disco.

Visitors will also have the chance to experience the world of sensory impairment and learn more about the challenges involved.

Ms Head said: “All of the people we support are getting involved. We are promoting a total communication environment because a lot of our individuals have communication difficulties.”

There will also be a BBQ as well as tea, coffee and cake on offer.

Seahaven is one of thousands of care homes across the UK taking part in the initiative, working to create lasting links between care home residents and the community.
