Adam Birchall rescued a point for Dover in an entertaining Blue Square Bet South derby with Welling at Crabble on Tuesday.

Birchall (pictured) pounced on an error by former Whites keeper Charlie Mitten, who spilled Tom Wynter's long-range drive with 12 minutes left.

It meant Andy Pugh's glorious second-half strike, which had separated the sides did not prove to be the match winner as both teams preserved their unbeaten starts to the campaign.

Cash-strapped Welling could only name a squad of 15 players with Jack Parkinson preferred in a midfield role and Andy Sambrook placed in defence.

Dover handed home debuts to Harry Baker, Elliott Charles and Luke l'Anson, the latter having a goal ruled out for offside before he gave the hosts an 18th-minute lead.

Birchall saw his low right-foot shot saved by the legs of Mitten but l'Anson reacted quickest to the loose ball to score against the side that he played for at the end of last season.

Mitten then had to tip Charles' effort over the bar as Dover threatened to run riot but Welling restored parity nine minutes before the break.

A beautifully worked move saw Joe Healy exchange passes with Pugh before leaving two defenders grounded as he took his time and slotted past keeper Ross Flitney.

Welling should have been ahead by half-time but Parkinson opted against shooting and set up Luis Cumbers, who was denied by a brilliant Olly Schulz block.

Loui Fazackerley set up Pugh for Welling's second goal six minutes into the second half, with the former Gillingham striker curling home a stunning strike from 25 yards.

Dover found chances hard to come by thereafter but two minutes after the introduction of Shaun Welford they were back on level terms when Wynter's shot was too hot to handle and Birchall converted to claim a share of the spoils.
