Welling United 1 Forest Green Rovers 1 match report

Former Welling striker Kurtis Guthrie scored a late equaliser to save leaders Forest Green from defeat at Park View Road on Tuesday night.

Welling led just after the hour through Michael Bakare but Guthrie headed in an 82nd-minute leveller.

Chances were few and far between in the first half, with Forest Green's best moments coming inside the first eight minutes.

Welling's Xavier Vidal lost the ball cheaply in midfield but keeper Tom King came to his rescue by tipping over Darren Carter's 20-yard left-foot shot.

Within 60 seconds Rovers' Charlie Clough latched onto Jon Parkin's flick but his cross-shot flashed across the face of King's goal.

Thereafter, Welling defended well against a team top of the table and managed by two former Wings bosses in Adrian Pennock and Jamie Day.

As an attacking force, it took Welling 25 minutes to register a serious attempt on goal when Vidal's vicious 25-yard free-kick was turned behind by keeper Johnny Maxted.

Within a minute, Elliot Frear's shot was deflected wide off Michael Chambers and Welling successfully saw out the rest of the half without further alarm.

In attack, Michael Bakare certainly kept the two centre-halves honest while returning midfielder Harry Lee - back on loan at Welling from Leyton Orient - was pivotal in the centre of the park.

It needed an excellent defensive block by Welling's Kevin Lokko to deny Rob Sinclair early in the second half before Welling took the lead in the 63rd minute.

Lee won the ball in midfield and led a three-on-two break, feeding Bakare, whose low shot from 20 yards was too powerful for Maxted.

It needed an outstanding one-handed save by King to keep Welling infront with 19 minutes left when Parkin headed a right-wing corner goalwards.

But the equaliser did arrive with eight minutes left when Frear, the visitors' best player, delivered an excellent cross and Kurtis Guthrie ghosted in to nod home against his former club.
