National League Welling survived a late FA Trophy wobble at spirited Ryman League Tibury on Saturday.

Leading 3-0 at the break, George Porter's double looked to have Loui Fazakerley's side through.

But a 4-0 scoreline suddenly turned into 4-3 in the last 10 minutes and in the end the Wings were left hanging on.

Welling got off to a perfect start playing with a strong wind in their favour in just 30 seconds.

Barney Williams' deep cross to the far post was met by the towering Kieron St.Aimie who headed back across goal beyond keeper Clarke Bogard to put Welling in front.

Both sides then matched up, Welling always appearing on top with the wind dictating that extra control.

The game was lacking in quality until Porter delivered a moment of class on 32 minutes. A stunning right-foot volley from 25 yards left Bogard helpless as it floated in.

Welling stepped up the pace before the break and a fortunate third arrived just before half-time. Somehow the offside flag stayed down and Porter raced clear, rounded keeper Bogard and tapped into an empty net.

The hosts had felt hard done by following a series of decision by referee Carl Brook but on this occasion they had just cause.

Tilbury had two left-offs early in the second half, however, when Kurt Smith could have easily collected a second caution but the official opted for a telling off both times.

Welling defended well although Tilbury's approach work was neat and tidy, the Ryman League Division 1 North side lacked quality in the final third.

The game was effectively over just before the hour mark when Ben Jefford's pull back was turned in by skipper Ricky Wellard.

Tilbury substitute Tony Martin then fired over on the turn and Smith's low drive was saved by Mike McEntegart, who kept his place ahead of Tom King in goal.

Porter was denied his hat-trick by Bogard before McEntegart turned behind substitute Tony Martin's low drive at the other end.

Tilbury's industry was rewarded with a deflected goal seven minutes from time when Carlile's long-range strike deceived McEntegart.

The visitors then had an effort cleared off the line before Kurt Smith slotted in from close range in the 86th minute to set up a potential grandstand finish.

Tilbury pushed bodies forward in an attempt to get a third but McEntegart's smart block denied Carlile another clear sight of goal.

Five minutes into stoppage time, left-back Danny Glozier fired in a goal of the season contender from 35 yards.

And there was still time for Tilbury to go close again before referee Brook blew the full-time whistle.

The referee's work was still not done, however, as Tilbury's discipline let them down and a red card was shown to a substitute after the game.
