Charlton Athletic have reappointed former Head Coach José Riga to the role on an 18-month contract, a day after interim boss Karel Fraeye was sacked.

The 58-year-old Riga enjoyed a successful spell at The Valley in 2014 when he steered the Addicks away from the foot of the Championship and to safety. with the Addicks board hoping for a repeat with Athletic second-bottom and effectively four points from safety.

Fraeye departed on Wednesday a day after the 5-0 defeat at Huddersfield, Charlton's 10th game without a win stretching back to the 1-0 success at Birmingham in November, during which time they have taken just four league points and exited the club to League 1 Colchester.

In his 16 games at the helm following Riga's appointment in March, Charlton won seven and drew three to claim 24 points and were one of the division's form teams.

Charlton owner Roland Duchâtelet said: “This has been a disappointing season for everyone connected with Charlton and the board take responsibility for that.

"Some things, like an unprecedented number of injuries, we could not have foreseen, but we have also made errors in recruitment, mistakes we have immediately tried to address in January.

“It was also crucial we dealt with the position of the Head Coach.

"José did an excellent job in his short period with Charlton two seasons ago. He was very popular with supporters and I believe that he will get us back on track.

"There are 20 matches of the season still to play and it’s vital that we battle for every point.”

Riga guided Belgian club Standard Liege to the last 16 of the Europa League in 2011/12 having previously won the Belgian Division 2 with unfancied R.A.E.C. Mons.

After leaving Charlton in the summer of 2014, Riga had a brief stint at Blackpool before returning to Liege for the end of 2014/15.

He was appointed as Head Coach of French Ligue 2 club Metz last June but left the club last month with them lying in sixth.

Charlton face a trip to Hull on Saturday (3pm).
