Kent based Charlton fans await early insight into take-over plans

Kent based Charlton supporters will be the first to gain an insight into the proposed take-over of the club by the mega-rich Dubai-based Zabeel Investments.

Club plc chairman Derek Chappell and his deputy Bob Whitehand will be the guests at Tuesday's meeting of the Bromley branch of the Charlton Supporters' Club.

Ian Wallis, who will chair the meeting, said: "We were expecting a big attendance but since the news broke that the club is the subject of a take-over, I'm sure it will be standing room only."

Admission is free and Charlton supporters from all over Kent are expected to flock to the meeting at the Bickley and Widmore Working Men's Club in Tylney Road which starts at 8pm.

Charlton's plc board have recommended the offer be accepted which would mean a huge cash injection for the club, enabling it to wipe off a £20 million debt and and compete for top players at home and abroad.

In welcoming the substantial investment Mr Chappell said: "The board believes that a successful outcome for this transaction would be beneficial to shareholders, employees of Charlton, all supporters and our community work in Kent."

Zabeel, who are owned by the Dubai royal family, have a £5 billion propety portfolio. Their representatives were at The Valley on Wednesday for talks and will now spend the next two weeks looking at the club's books.

The company had been strongly linked with a possible take-over of Premier League Newcastle but company executive chairman Mohammed Al Hashimi said: "We had been looking at the opportunity to invest in a leading English football club and have been monitoring the situation at Charlton Athletic very closely.

"We feel the time is right to make a strategic long-term investment in Charlton so the club can get back to where it belongs in the Premier League.

"The passion of the supporters, the heritage of the club and the unique status it enjoys in the community make it an exciting proposition for us."

Charlton's close proximity to the Thames Gateway project was especially appealing to Jabeel.
