KENT athlete Anne Goad set a British Masters record in her first ever decathlon.

The Dartford Harriers athlete was part of the British team which travelled to Neosho, Missouri, for the USA National Masters decathlon and heptathlon championships.

Dartford were also represented by Dennis Thacker who was only persuaded to enter at the last minute.

Neither athlete had ever tried the decathlon which involves 10 disciplines of 100m, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400m, 100m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500m.

As women have only recently been allowed to do the decathlon, Goad’s score of 5,578 points was an inaugural British women’s 45 record.

Thacker made his debut with a score of 3,756 in the M45 age group.
