Addicks board backing Pardew

Alan Pardew goes into Saturday’s home game against Ipswich under pressure having received the dreaded vote of confidence from Derek Chappell, chairman of Charlton plc.

Twenty months into his tenure, the manager’s position is seriously being questioned after one win in six games plunged the club to 17th in the Coca-Cola Championship following an uninspiring start in which the club has fallen well adrift of the pace-setters.

Tuesday’s inept performance in the south London derby defeat by arch-rivals Crystal Palace compounded his problems as directors and supporters alike were left fuming.

Mr Chappell insisted: “Not once have the board considered reviewing Alan Pardew’s position and understand the financial constraints he has been asked to work with.

“So there is no truth in the rumours that his job is under threat. Alan Pardew is our manager and he will be for a long time to come.”

Pardew, who signed a highly lucrative three and a half year contract on his appointment on December 24, 2006, was asked if he felt under pressure in the aftermath of the Palace defeat.

All he would say was: “I just feel that I want to win a game as soon as possible. That’s all I have to say on the matter.”

Pardew looks set to shake-up the side for the visit of Ipswich and threatened changes.

He added: “I think the time as come to put people in who deserve a chance.

“There will definitely be two or three changes to that side because I need to find a blend that will win us a game. We really need to look after ourselves and put a run together otherwise we’ll find ourselves in trouble.

“Right now I need to analyse the game rather than act on a gut feeling. That wouldn’t be fair on the players.”

Central defender Linvoy Primus is doubtful with a back injury sustained late in Tuesday’s game.
