Charlton Athletic had their eight-game winning run ended by a stubborn Walsall side in a 1-1 draw on Saturday.

The Addicks' lead at the top of League 1 was cut to five points after they failed to complete a comeback from 1-0 down against the Saddlers - who finished with 10 men.

The hosts began the brighter and took the lead when Mat Sadler's cross after a corner was teed-up by Oliver Lancashire for John Macken to lash in from close range nine minutes before half-time.

Charlton managed to go into the break on level terms after Hogan Ephraim's fine cross from the left was powerfully headed past Jimmy Walker and into the net by Yann Kermorgant (pictured).

It was the Frenchman's sixth goal of the season, with what turned out to be Athletic's only effort on target.

After the break Ben Hamer denied Claude Gnapka and Darel Russel then headed Sadler's effort from the follow-up off the line.

In a frantic finale Sadler saw red after collecting a second yellow card for fouling Scott Wagstaff and the visitors wanted a penalty for handball against Richard Taundry, after an Ephraim cross, only to be awarded a corner from which Kermorgant spurned the chance to win it for the Addicks by rattling the post with a header.
