Two men have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a man was shot.

A man in his 30s sustained an arm injury following an incident in Cooper Close, Greenhithe at around 7.45pm last night.

Officers investigating the attack have arrested a 38-year-old man from Greenhithe and a 41-year-old man from south east London. They remain in custody as inquiries continue.

The victim remains at a London hospital and is in a stable condition.

Detective Chief Inspector Gavin Moss said: "Our enquiries into this incident are very much in their early stages and members of the public may see an increased police presence in the Cooper Close area while we seek to establish the full circumstances."

Residents living near to the scene described how a police cordons were in place on nearby Swallow Close and Chalice Way today, and that no one was being allowed through while police searched the area.

Forensics officers were also on the scene and sniffer dogs were searching the area, including nearby woodland.

Seven police cars and one van were parked in the road and police were using yellow markers and chalk outlines to pinpoint potential evidence.

A resident from Griffin Walk opposite Cooper Close, who did not wish to be named, said she did not see anything but heard what sounded "like a firework".

She said: "The only thing I thought was a bit odd was about 8 o'clock I was in bed and my cat jumped up like it had heard fireworks. My cat was absolutely petrified."

"I have lived her 11 years and it has got progressively worse. It is quite worrying this happening on your doorstep."

She went to check on her neighbour and friend who lives across the street who said he had seen empty bullet shells on the ground near his home.

One Chalice Way resident said: "I came home from a night shift at around 8 o'clock and was not allowed in by police.

"One of the neighbours said a young man had been shot in the early hours of this morning.

"But the police are not telling us anything."

Another from nearby Bell Close added: "This is the first we have ever heard of anything like this happening around here."
