Drivers were then held on the clockwise crossing from J31 in Thurrock to J1A at Dartford while traffic officers attended.

A spokesman for Highways England said: "There was a person walking over the bridge at 11.32.

"Traffic officers responded as there’s no footpath to cross, hence the closure, and he was abusive to them."

Essex police were also made aware of the incident. No injuries were reported.

The Crossing was temporarily closed to allow the broken down vehicle to be recovered.

This caused queues to form on the Essex side of the bridge.

At midday there were up to 45 min delays but the bridge has now reopened and traffic is moving freely.
