It is believed to have started at the Oakview Stud Farm, off Lombard Street, where multiple units were found alight.

Police were called and shut off the road while crews, wearing breathing apparatus, used hose reel jets to extinguish the fire which lasted more than eight hours.

Katy Goldsbrough, landlord of The Bull, said the smoke was so thick it had set off her pub's fire alarm further down the street.

She said: "From what I could tell it was inside by the MOT garage and was a car set alight.

"The smoke was so thick it literally set off my own fire alarm."

The publican, who owns land at the other end of the street, said she spoke to officers who reassured her it had not spread further.

No casualties were reported and the cause is currently under investigation.

Police say inquiries are ongoing.
