KENT Police are appealing for witnesses after a man died in hospital shortly after his car careered into a lamppost.

The green Renault Clio he was driving crashed in University Way, Dartford, near a roundabout at Marsh Street, at about 7.30pm on Friday.

The 55-year-old man was taken to Dartford's Darent Valley Hospital where he later died. He has not yet been identified.

It was the second tragedy involving a car driver hitting a lamppost in North Kent this month.

In the early hours of Saturday, August 4, David Carroll, 24, from Dartford, died after his red Vauxhall Astra struck a lamppost in Watling Street, Bean, near Dartford.

Mr Carroll was cut free by firefighters using hydraulic rescue equipment but was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Anyone with information about either fatality is asked to contact Kent Police's serious collision investigation unit on 01622 798538.
