Charlton Athletic dug deep to secure a point from a draw at Scunthorpe United on Saturday.

The Addicks took the lead after just six minutes when Bradley Wright-Phillips swept home a Scott Wagstaff cross after an exchange of passes with Yann Kermorgant to register his 20 goal of the campaign.

However midway through the first half Rhoys Wiggins brought down Garry Thompson in the box after Michael Morrison failed to clear his lines and Jon Parkin slammed home the resultant spot-kick past Ben Hamer.

After the break the hosts were on top and Hamer superbly foiled former Gills winger Andy Barcham, tipping his shot past the post after Morrison and Matt Taylor had slipped over and another Thompson effort to keep the scores level.

Wagstaff spurned the chance to win the game for the Addicks - who lost skipper Johnny Jackson to a suspected ankle injury - mis-kicking when well-placed to beat Sam Slocombe.

Second-placed Sheffield United could only draw at home to Tranmere, so remain nine points, however third-placed Sheffield Wednesday are only behind their city rivals on goal-difference after a 2-1 win at Notts County.
