Dartford and Swanley Scouts raising funds for World Scout Jamboree

A determined scout has been selected to attend the 24th World Scout Jamboree, despite being registered blind.

Jacob Hare, from Horton Kirby, was chosen alongside 125 other participants to represent Kent at the event.

The 14 year-old suffers from a genetic degenerative eye condition called retinal dystrophy.

Despite his limited vision, Jacob attends the Leigh Academy mainstream school in Dartford.

He is also in training to be a junior leader for the cub section at the 1st Horton Kirby Scout Group.

Thousands of scouts from across the world are set to attend the rally, which will be held in the American state of West Virginia in 2019.

For ten days, young people will learn new skills and take part in exciting activities whilst growing as global citizens.

Jacob, who also plays cricket with Kent's visually impaired performance squad, is now working to raise the funds needed for his trip.

He must generate £3945 in order to attend the jamboree, a portion of which will be used to help scouts from third-world countries attend the event.

The 13 year-old is one of the four other scouts chosen to represent the Swanley district.

She has been attending Ash Green Scout group since 2013, and will be the first scout from New Ash Green to attend the rally since the club began 40 years ago.

Her first fundraising event will be a chocolate bingo night on Saturday, April 14.

It will be held at New Ash Green Youth and Community Centre between 6pm and 9pm.

The first two games are free, and after that tickets can be purchased for £4 a game.
