Rush hour crash causes A2 gridlock

Drivers were stuck in a six-mile tailback after an accident on the A2 near Dartford this morning.

The accident involving three cars happened around 7.40am on the coast-bound carriageway, just before the turn-off for the Dartford crossing.

One car rolled onto its roof. Dartford fire crews said the occupants had managed to free themselves before they arrived. One of the people involved has been taken to Darent Valley Hospital with minor injuries.

Police are currently on the scene and said that one lane has been closed from 8.30am while the vehicles are removed from the hard shoulder.

Freelance journalist Nick Lillitos, who is trying to get from Dartford to Maidstone, said he had been stuck for nearly an hour.

He added: "The mileometer has hardly been above zero and the traffic has come to a complete standstill in all three lanes. I would guess there is traffic easily stretching back around five to six miles."
