Police cordon off Esso petrol station and Tesco in Dartford Road, Dartford after burglary

The Esso garage and Tesco store has now been reopened after an overnight raid.

Burglars smashed through a window of the shop in Dartford Road, Dartford, just after 1am on Thursday.

Police were called by a number of people who could hear banging, and then the alarm start to sound.

A window was shattered, and cash stolen.

One woman, who overlooks the garage said: "All I could hear was 'bang bang bang'. I looked out of my window and saw a big van parked up next to where the cash machine is.

"Two people, I'm pretty certain they were men, got out and starting to bang on the outside of the shop.

"I called the police and they said somebody else had just called about the same thing.

"Then the alarm to the shop went off and they got straight back in the van and drove off down Dartford Road towards Crayford.

"The police were quick to arrive and two cars followed where the van went, straight down the road."

A Tesco spokesman said: “Our Dartford Esso Express store is open and trading as normal following a break in on Wednesday night. We are assisting the police with their investigation.”

A police spokesman said: "Kent Police was called at 1.15am to a report of a burglary at a service station shop on Dartford Road, Dartford.

"It was reported that a window was smashed and a quantity of cash stolen from within.

"Inquiries into the incident are ongoing."

No arrests have yet been made.

The shop and petrol station remained closed on Thursday afternoon but was open for business as usual on Friday.
