PARENTS and pupils face a hazardous walk into school while work continues on their new car park.

The car park at Westgate Primary School in Dartford is still a building site, despite assurances the work would have finished by the new term.

Building work started in the summer of 2007 as part of a 25 million project to refurbish the school, along with a new secondary school and an upgraded adult education centre on the same site.

But work on the car park is ongoing, with parents being channelled along narrow pathways through the site.

In one incident last Friday, parents claimed a metal fence had fallen on a pupil.

Father Sean Byrne, of Savoy Road, has now drawn up a petition with 117 signatures which he plans to present to KCC this week.

KCC apologised for the inconvenience caused to parents and children since moving into the new building last year.

Cabinet member for education operations, resources and skills Mark Dance said: "We are liaising with the contractors to ensure that all health and safety guidelines are strictly adhered to and any disruption is kept to a minimum."

KCC said the work should be completed within the next six months.
