The Dartford Crossing is finally getting back to normal after four hours of chaos following two multiple accidents.

What made the situation so bad was they both happened in the right hand Essex-bound tunnel. The second accident happened only minutes after the earlier wreckage had been cleared.

Drivers were delayed for around an hour as traffic built in the morning rush hour.

One person was slightly hurt in the first accident.

Another person had to be cut free from the wreckage of their car after the second accident in the two-lane traffic.

Lorries were particularly hard hit: the right-hand tunnel is the one used by large or abnormal loads.

The wagons built up in the holding park alongside the management offices until the all clear was given at 11.30am.

By then traffic was back beyond the Swanley junction 3.

A Highways Agency spokesman said: "It will take some time to get the traffic flowing properly, but it should be all right by the afternoon rush hour."
