A Charlie Sheringham brace was not enough for Dartford to spring an FA Trophy first round upset at Crawley on Satuday.

The Darts led twice during the game – and were 2-0 up after only 10 minutes – but two late Crawley goals ensured the tie went to a replay.

Sheringham celebrated his return to the Darts side by driving home the opening goal after only three minutes.

Things got even better for Darts when they added a second seven minutes later to stun the Blue Square Premier high-fliers.

Ryan Hayes’ corner from the right went over everybody and into the net off the far post to put the visitors firmly in control.

Crawley had chances to get back into the game before the break, notably when Chris Flood hit the post.

The home side applied sustained pressure at the start of the second half and Richard Brodie was on target to pull a goal back 10 minutes after the break.

Brodie then hit the post, but Darts restored their two goal lead after 71 minutes when Sheringham powered the ball home from the edge of the box.

The home side refused to give up and grabbed a second when substitute Craig McAllister netted from the penalty spot with eight minutes left.

And they netted an equaliser when Dean Howell’s free-kick went through the wall and into the back of the net a minute from full-time.

Brodie thought he had won it for the home side late-on but his effort was ruled out for offside.
