Congestion at the Dartford Crossing may go, but not charges

Toll barriers at the Dartford Crossing could be scrapped under new plans, but drivers will still have to pay.

Moves are being made to see whether congestion at the crossing could be relieved with an electronic charging system.

This would remove the need for barriers - something drivers, nearby residents, businesses, politicians and the Messenger have been campaigning against for years.

The system is expected to operate like a congestion charge which would remove the requirement to stop at the barriers.

Transport Minister Mike Penning revealed the proposals in a Commons debate.
