Charlton Athletic extended their lead at the top of League 1 with a 2-0 win over Brentford in a derby at The Valley on Monday.

The game was delayed by a power cut but when it eventually got underway the Addicks banished the memory of Saturday's defeat to Leyton Orient.

Michael Morrison (pictured) opened the scoring when he headed Danny Hollands cross past keeper Richard Lee from close-range shortly after the half-hour for his third goal of the campaign so far.

Leon Legge and Niall McGinn went close to levellers for the visitors before the break while Johnnie Jackson struck the woodwork with a header for the Addicks after the interval.

Marcus Bean spurned a good chance to level from 10 yards out after the break before Danny Green wrapped up the points with his second in as many appearances, a cool finish in the final minute after latching onto a long clearance from Ben Hamer.

With second-placed Sheffield United losing at Carlisle, it meant Chris Powell's side went five points clear of Sheffield Wednesday, who leapfrogged their Steel City rivals with victory over Tranmere.
