Charlton have dropped below Crystal Palace in the Championship table after losing to their local rivals on Friday night.

The only goal of the game was scored by Kagisho Dikgacoi, five minutes after half-time. The South African’s strike condemned the Addicks to their first league defeat against Palace at The Valley since 1968.

Early on, Wilfried Zaha looked dangerous for the visitors as he laid on good chances for Dikgacoi and Glenn Murray.

At the other end, Bradley Wright-Phillips thought he had given Charlton the lead when he sent a header flying past Julian Speroni, only to see the goal was ruled out for offside.

Palace scored what proved to be the winner on 50 minutes. Damien Delaney headed Owen Garvan’s corner back across goal and Dikgacoi was on hand to crash the ball into the Addicks net.

The home side did have chances to snatch a point. Danny Hollands fired wastefully wide and Ricardo Fuller had an effort tipped onto the crossbar, before Charlton keeper Ben Hamer, up for a last-gasp corner, had a header dramatically cleared off the line.

Charlton visit Derby County on Tuesday night. Both sides are hovering just above the relegation places after picking up five points from their first five games.
