Charlton Athletic crashed out of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy courtesy of a 3-0 derby defeat to Brentford at the Valley on Wednesday night.

The Bees booked their place in the third round after making a fast start against a much-changed Charlton side infront of fewer than 3,500 fans.

It was the second successive year Brentford have ousted Chris Powell's (pictured) side from the competition, last year's beaten finalists needed penalties to see-off the Addicks challenge last December.

The visitors were ahead inside 90 seconds when Blair Adams netted at the second time of asking after John Sullivan had denied David Clarkson's initial effort.

Debutant Mikel Alonso then conceded a 24th minute penalty with a foul on Toumani Diagouraga, which allowed Kevin O'Conner to fire home from the spot.

At the other end Danny Green saw a free-kick saved by Simon Moore before the break but just after the hour mark Diagouraga fired in the third, beating the offside flag and capitalising on some slack home defending to seal Brentford's progress.
