Scott Wagstaff's first half strike proved enough to help Charlton back into the play-off places in League One with a 1-0 win at home to Sheffield Wednesday.

The striker chested down in the area before volleying past Wednesday goalkeeper and former Addick Nicky Weaver on 23 minutes. Fielding an unchanged side from last weekend's thrilling 4-3 win at Carlisle, Charlton gained the upper hand early on.

Paul Benson's header grazed the post on eight minutes from a Simon Francis free kick, but Rob Elliot was also called into action in the Charlton goal soon after as he saved from striker Marcus Tudgay.

Wagstaff broke the deadlock when he showed composure in the box to control a corner from Johnnie Jackson, before shooting past Weaver's right hand at the second attempt. The first effort had bounced back to him off Benson's back before he finished for his sixth goal of the season.

The result sees Charlton leap-frog Wednesday up to sixth, a point behind the automatic promotion places.
