However Maria Thurston, lifestyles assistant at the home, has had a fear of birds her whole life.

The 58-year-old said: “I have a fear of birds and was not looking forward to this visit at all.

“However, once I’d seen the residents interacting with the birds, I realised how gentle they were and I felt inspired to hold and stroke them, which was a wonderful experience.

“The fear of them flapping their wings and flying at me still remained with me though while I held the birds but I am pleased that I had the opportunity to hold the birds like this. I am looking forward to their next visit.”

The home is part of the Oakland Care group and offers residential, nursing, memory and respite care for up to 77 residents.
