Charlton Athletic's fine start to the League 1 campaign continued with a narrow victory at Brentford on Saturday - their sixth straight win.

The Addicks are five points clear of second-placed Huddersfield - who visit the Valley on Monday week - after red-hot Bradley Wright-Phillips secured the victory with his 14th goal of the season.

The hosts bossed the opening half with Nial McGinn rattling the post, with Addicks keeper Ben Hamer beaten, and Clayton Donaldson heading wide when well-placed.

However Wright-Phillips notched the all-important goal shortly after the hour mark, turning in Danny Green's low cross from close range to make it seven goals in his last five league games, scoring in all of them.

A serious injury to Bees defender Shaleum Logan resulted in 13 minutes of added time at the end of the second half, during which Hamer ensured his clean sheet with a save to deny Mike Grella.

The one low point was an injury to skipper Johnnie Jackson in a freak fall at the side of the pitch as he tried to keep the ball in play late-on.

The Addicks are seven points ahead of third-placed Sheffield Wednesday and a whopping 16 ahead of the play-off chasing pack.
