University challenge for table tennis youngsters

A TABLE TENNIS rally for young people is to be held at the University of Kent at Canterbury on Saturday, March 16. The rally has been organised by the local authoritites of Shepway, Dover, Canterbury and Thanet, with support from Sport Canterbury and District, Canterbury and District Table Tennis Association and the English Table Tennis Association.

The rally follows on from table tennis work already undertaken in primary schools by the sports development sections of each of the authorities and their respective table tennis leagues.

Sport Canterbury and District, the local sports council for Canterbury, received £1,400 from an Awards for All application made to the lottery sports fund and, along with support from the local authorities, the cost involved will be kept to a minimum. There will be training from qualified coaches of both national and county standard, and an exhibition by an international player. The event will run from 10am to 4pm with players being transported free of charge from Folkestone, Dover, Margate and Canterbury, with about 100 young people expected to attend.

It is intended to run the event annually, with each district taking a turn as host.
