Hockey trio called up for England squad

CANTERBURY Hockey Club trio Anna Bennett, Frances Houslop and Mel Clewlow have been included in England’s squad for the European Nations Cup in Barcelona next month.

The competition is part of their build up to the 2004 Olympics. The winners in Spain earn automatic qualification for Athens.

England have not won the tournament title since 1991 but they they have been in excellent form, losing just two of their last 20 matches.

During that run they have enjoyed morale-boosting victories over Australia and Holland, who are favourites for the Nations Cup.

The tournament runs from September 1 to 13 and in England’s group are Ireland, Wales, Germany, Ukraine and Italy.

Their squad features just two changes to the one that finished fifth in last year’s World Cup.

Helen Richardson and Denise Marston-Smith are both injured so the selectors have turned to Sydney Olympian Fiona Greenham of Slough and Commonwealth Games silver medallist Jo Ellis, of Ipswich.
