GOLFER Chris Gay scored the eighth hole-in-one of his career at Canterbury last week.

The 68-year-old former Canterbury City Council chief executive aced the 120-yard eighth for the fourth time.

Playing into a stiff breeze, Gay drifted a six-iron tee shot in from the left and saw the ball strike the pin and disappear from view.

"I thought it had gone in," he said, "but none of my playing partners was watching.

"One had wandered off and the other two were chatting.

"They didn't take me seriously when I said I had holed my tee shot but I had the last laugh!"

The feat helped Gay and his partner, Neil Webber, to overcome John Farrier and Colin Houghton in a friendly but it still proved costly for the nine-handicapper when he returned to the clubhouse.
