Canterbury City replaced AFC Sheppey at the top of Vandanel Kent County League Division 1 East on Saturday, as Wayne Fittall’s goal settled the teams’ promotion clash at Holm Place.

Fittall, playing as part of a three-pronged attack alongside Dan Bonneywell and top scorer Royston Gough, hit the winner on 68 minutes, following in after Calum McGeehan’s free-kick was partially cleared. Up until that point, the home side had done well to reduce City’s opportunities, as Dave Fairclough’s side struggled to find a way through.

The visitors first chance came on 23 minutes, when Gough found enough room to get his shot away, only for the Sheppey 'keeper to save well.

Sheppey came into the game at the start of the second half, firing wide on a couple of occasions, before Bonneywell went close with a chip.

City went even closer when Scott Lawford struck the bar from a free-kick, but they weren’t to be denied a minute later when Fittall pounced.
