Canterbury City bowed out of the Inter-Regional Challenge Cup on Saturday when they were beaten 2-1 at home by Vandanel Kent County League Premier Division side Hollands & Blair.

The visitors took a first-half lead with a powerful header by Mark Chapman but the goal was gifted by a mix-up in defence where goalkeeper Danny Wrench was making his first team debut in difficult conditions.

Lee Preston was a constant threat to the City defence and took H&B into a two-goal lead after 58 minutes when he was given too much space, drew Wrench out of goal and planted his shot home.

City then changed their formation, but although Wayne Fittall headed in from a corner the visitors held on for the win.

City manager Dave Fairclough said: "It was useful to come up against opposition of this standard.

"It gave us something to work on – a better idea of what we are likely to come up against week in week out.

"Hollands & Blair played good football throughout and we weren’t at our best".
