Villagers gunning for speeding drivers

Motorists watch out - villagers in Boughton have their own speed gun and digital display screen to catch drivers breaking the speed limit.

It has become the first village in Swale to use Kent Police’s community speedwatch scheme.

Mid Kent traffic co-ordinator PC Warren Jarvis and village PCSO Leanne Lawrence were on hand to lend advice on where and when the equipment could be most effective.

Parish councillor Thomas Collett-White and his team of volunteers have been instrumental in bringing the scheme to Boughton.

“After doing a referendum with residents last year, we asked people what kind of action they wanted to see taken and this scheme allowed us to employ a practical and affordable approach,” he said.

“Interactive signs like these are very good at getting the message across to motorists in a simplistic way because it gives you an immediate answer.”

Drivers caught speeding will have their registrations logged onto a database.

If they become repeat offenders, they will be written to by police and the relevant action will be taken.

The parish council team are planning to use the equipment again this Saturday.
