Trains were delayed by around 30 minutes after reports of trespassers on the tracks.

The power had to be switched off while emergency services dealt with the incident near Canterbury West railway station this evening (Wednesday).

Some trains were diverted via alternative routes between Ashford and Ramsgate.

Among those caught up in the delays was KentOnline reporter Ruth Cassidy who was on a train from St Pancras heading to Canterbury.

She said: “The train had been delayed because someone was trespassing on the tracks at the St Dunstan's level crossing.

“The conductor announced that the powered rail had been turned off because the trespasser was seen kicking the third rail.”

Trains are now running again normally in both directions.

A Southeastern spokesman said: "We would like to apologise to customers after the trespass incident this evening at Canterbury West.

"We would encourage customers to claim for delay repayment on our website if their journey was delayed by more than 15 minutes.

"Trespassing on the railway line is incredibly dangerous and may render those responsible liable to prosecution as well as being very disruptive to customers whose trains are delayed because of it."

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: “We were called at 6.32pm to reports of a trespasser on the tracks near Canterbury West Railway Station. Officers attended, there have not been any arrests at this time.”
