He suffered serious head injuries and was treated at the scene before being taken to a London hospital.

Officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit are now appealing for witnesses to the collision.

Senior investigating officer detective sergeant Scott Lynch said: "The road was fairly quiet at that time of the morning but if you saw the collision or the Rover being driven beforehand and have not yet spoken to police, please can you call our office on 01622 798538 or email sciu.td@kent.pnn.police.uk quoting reference MW/138/15."

Six hours later an air-ambulance was called to a seven-vehicle smash on the M2 at Junction 6 for Faversham.

The accident– believed to involve six cars and a motorbike – happened at 7.50am.

Police were forced to shut both lanes of the dual-carriageway to allow the air ambulance to land.

All lanes were reopened by 9.45am.
