A man has died and a woman and child have been seriously injured in a crash on the A2.

One carriageway of the A2 at Canterbury remained shut for several hours following the crash this afternoon - which also left a woman and child with serious injuries.

At one stage both carriageways were closed, as two air ambulances attended.

A police spokesman said the coast-bound carriageway would remain closed for several hours, but the London-bound stretch opened at around 4.30pm.

Road closures were put in place between Brenley Corner and Harbledown, with drivers diverted along the A299 Thanet Way towards Whitstable.

Motorists also experienced delays on the A28 at Wincheap, on New Dover Road and on the coastbound M2 at junction 6 for Faversham.
