Seafront floodgates in a district will remain closed following wind driven tidal surges.

Canterbury City Council say the tide this afternoon and tomorrow morning will be higher than predicted.

Although no official flood alert has been issued by the Environment Agency, the seafront floodgates in towns - including Herne Bay and Whitstable - will remain closed as a precautionary measure.

It comes after a number of flood alerts were issued throughout Kent this week.

A spokesperson for the city council said: "There have been a few wind driven tidal surges over the past week for which the Environment Agency has issued flood alerts.

"The 4pm tide this afternoon and in particular the 4am Monday morning tide will be higher than the predicted astronomical tides.

"No official flood alert has yet been issued by the Environment Agency for these upcoming tides so this is a precautionary measure at the moment.

"Some floodgates will remain open but this doesn't mean we have forgotten to close them.

They continued: "The forecast will be monitored very closely over the next 24 hours and if necessary, we will close further floodgates along our seafront.

"Our staff will be out monitoring these high tides and operating the sluice gates on the coastal brooks to stop the sea flooding inland."
