Pro EU 'flash mob' demo in Canterbury's historic Buttermarket

Pro-EU campaigners are staging another 'flash mob' protest against Brexit in Canterbury today.

A big crowd of placard-waving demonstrators is expected to gather in the Buttermarket at around midday - next to the city's war memorial.

It follows a similar event outside Primark in Whitefriars last month which attracted around 100 supporters.

Organiser Louise Hummerstone said: "Since coming up with the protest idea, it has grown like a mushroom but I had no idea how many people were going to be there.

"It was brilliant to have so many people and the live-stream on Facebook was viewed by 40,000 people."

Now she is hoping for even bigger support at today's flash mob protest which will again be live-streamed.

"The European Union has united a warring continent, bringing an unprecedented 70 years of peace, and we are fighting to maintain that peace, and maintain the long history of communication and exchange that Canterbury is rightly proud of," she said.

"We are fighting to protect our hard won rights, and believe in Britain’s place leading the EU.

"We believe in cooperating with our nearest neighbours financially, educationally, culturally, scientifically and celebrating our diversity and shared human rights."
