A PEDESTRIAN killed under the wheels of a dustcart in Canterbury on Monday has been named as Francis McManus, who lived in London Road in the city. He was 64.

It is believed Mr McManus stumbled before he was struck by a Cleanaway truck in St Dunstan's Street. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Kent and Canterbury Hospital.

His relatives have been informed and an inquest into his death has been opened and adjourned.

A statement from the Cleanaway waste collection firm said: "We can confirm that one of our vehicles was involved in an accident. The police attended the scene and, pending the result of their investigation, we cannot comment further."

The driver of the truck, a 58-year-old man from Canterbury, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and bailed to return to Canterbury Police on July 16. A police spokesman said the arrest was standard procedure for any traffic incident of this scale.

St Dunstan's Street was closed for more than four hours while police crash investigators examined the scene.

Witnesses to the incident have been asked to call PC James Sutcliffe at Canterbury Police on 01227 762055.
