VW campervan engulfed in flames outside Canterbury

This is the moment a classic VW campervan went up in flames just outside Canterbury.

Fortunately, the owner is said to have escaped the burning vehicle but his pride and joy was destroyed by fire.

The dramatic picture was taken by Barry Phelan as the campervan was pulled over at the side of the road near Harbledown.

The fire, which happened on Sunday, is thought to have started in the engine bay and quickly engulfed the vehicle before firefighters arrived to put it out.

Mr Phelan, a martial arts instructor, said: "I was out walking my dog when I saw it happen.

"The driver had pulled over and got out to call the fire service.

"I had a quick chat with him to make sure he was OK and that no one else was in the van.

"Obviously, he was a bit choked up because it was his pride and joy but at least no one was hurt."
