New signing Mike Powell says he has nothing to prove after becoming Kent’s first winter recruit on a two-year deal.

The 34-year-old arrives at Canterbury following 15 seasons with Glamorgan.

Powell, who scored more than 12,000 first-class runs for Glamorgan in 209 games, is likely to slot into Kent’s top order following the departures of Joe Denly and Martin van Jaarsveld and is looking forward to the challenge.

He said: "I just think it’s the right move for me. There are a lot of players there that I respect as cricketers and when I went down to speak to the CEO, a lot of what he was talking about, in terms of going for promotion, was what I wanted to hear, so it all matched up.

"There were a number of clubs that spoke to my agent for me to sign but Kent was the right squad of players."

The Welshman feels a move to Canterbury provides him with a fresh challenge.

He added: "I was at Glamorgan for about 16 years and loved every minute there but everything has to come to an end.

"I don’t think I’ve got anything to prove to anyone. I have a reasonable record in terms of my cricket."
