Natalie Seymour helped England’s women win their first ever Champions Trophy medal by beating Germany 2-1 in the bronze play-off at Nottingham on Sunday.

The Canterbury Hockey Club defender, from Maidstone, celebrated with the rest of her team-mates at the end, after they bounced back well from the disappointment of being pipped to a place in the final the day before. They had been held to a 2-2 draw against New Zealand, while Argentina recorded a late 4-3 win against China.

England head coach, and ex-Canterbury man, Danny Kerry said: “It was an awesome response after what happened on Saturday.

"I thought there was only one team in it. Although we lost a scrappy goal, it was only a matter of time before we scored. To be that convincing was very rewarding for all the time and energy the girls put in.”

England trailed to Maike Stockel’s ninth minute volley and, despite creating several good chances, were still behind at the interval.

However, their pressure was rewarded with two goals in two minutes when Susie Gilbert put them level and Christa Cullen converted a penalty corner.

England survived a late scare just before the end when Janne Muller-Wieland missed a great chance at the far post.
